Spammers Shut Down

There's been a huge victory against spammers last week. An American web hosting provider called McColo was shut down last week by their upstream providers because of the massive amount of spam that was being sent through the provider.

It has been estimated that 70% of the world's spam was sent through this one provider.

When I first read about this, I just assumed that figure was exaggerated, but it's actually proven to be true! Here's a graph from SpamCop showing the amount of spam reported to them... (taken from here)



The graph shows the number of reported spam falling from 40 messages per second to 10 messages per second. That's amazing!

Obviously this is a huge win for all internet users, network providers and mail server managers like us. Let's hope this is just the first of many spam providers to be shut down.
